Born on February 20, 2003 in Murrieta, California, Olivia Rodrigo was a musical child who began singing lessons in kindergarten and started playing piano not long after. At the age of six, she began performing in stage productions and aged twelve she began playing guitar.
Rodrigo made her television debut as an actor in 2015 when, aged 12, she starred as Grace Thomas in direct-to-video film An American Girl: Grace Stirs Up Success. That year, she was also cast in the role of Page Olvera in the Disney Channel series Bizardvaark. Upon landing the lead role, which she played for three seasons, she moved to Los Angeles.
In 2019, she was cast in the starring role of Nini Salazar-Roberts on the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. She wrote the song "All I Want" and co-wrote "Just for a Moment" with co-star Joshua Bassett for the show’s soundtrack.
In 2020, Rodrigo signed with Interscope Records and Geffen Records. Her critically acclaimed debut single, "Drivers License", was released on January 8, 2021. The single broke Spotify's record twice for most daily streams ever for a non-holiday song with over 15.7 million global streams on January 11 and over 17 million global streams the next day, also breaking the Spotify record for the first song in history to hit 80 million streams in 7 days. It debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and also hit the top spot in several countries internationally.
Her follow-up single, "Deja Vu", was released in April 2021 and debuted at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first artist to debut their first two releases in the top 10 of the Hot 100. It peaked at number three on the chat.
May brought the release of her third single, "Good 4 U", became her second single to debut at number one on the Hot 100. At the end of the month, she released Sour, her debut album, which instantly hit number one on the Billboard 200 and broke the global Spotify record for the biggest opening week for an album by a female artist. It is the US’ third best-selling album of 2021. Sour spent a total of five weeks at the spot, becoming the longest reigning number-one album by a female artist in 2021.
In June, Rodrigo premiered a prom-themed concert film on YouTube titled Sour Prom. "Traitor", her fourth single, was released in August and also debuted in the top-10, entering the Hot 100 at number nine.
